Uncle Woodie

Last November, my father and I joined my Uncle Woodie in Bangkok for two weeks to visit family. I owe much of my experience in Thailand to him for showing me around and introducing me to his friends. I am very grateful for such an unforgettable opportunity.

My Uncle was the owner of two restaurants, first "Woodie's Quik Wok", and later "Big Town Hero". Many fond memories of my childhood involve driving from Portland to Coos Bay, and getting lunch at his restaurant as soon as we got into town (my favorite was Mar Far Chicken). I also remember going out on his deck and feeding his koi in his backyard, while he and my dad conversed in Thai.

Sadly, Uncle Woodie passed away last month, at home in North Bend. He will be greatly missed.

"what does it mean to be asian american?" is the questioned posed to each of the journal writers. like yellow (silkscreen), the journal also provides a stark contrast to the dry statistical facts that are presented in the asian population census: 2000.

The Yellow Journal Project is the work of University of Oregon Digital Arts BFA student Alison Ho.
